[CW:MONTHLY] Training Opportunities

As journalists face the daunting realities of our profession and the shrinking newsroom, we are always looking for ways to be more marketable, to transition to another field, or to stay relevant for our current employers. The first step is often obtaining new skills.

Shrinking newsroom budgets also means there is less money for professional development and less time to actually attend. But that does not mean you have to stop looking for training opportunities. From in-person classes to on-demand training modules, there are plenty of options to gain the skills you need to get ahead as a journalist or branch out into something new.

So, where to begin. At the NLGJA National Convention in Montreal, I offered a number of options for people who are looking for training, whether you are in New York or Cheyenne. Some are expensive, but others are free. All of them are geared towards journalists looking to improve their skills.

Poynter Institute
One of the best places to find online training opportunities is through the Poynter Institute. Committed to improving journalism and the profession, they are most well-known for hosting the journalism news blog Romenesko. But their real focus is on ethics and the profession, including a training component called NewsU. In addition to live programs, they also have a library of webinars and future webinars. Some are free, others have scholarships, and all are relatively cheap.

Council of National Journalism Organizations
The Council of National Journalism Organizations has created a searchable website--managed by the Society of Professional Journalists--that includes both in-person and online training from a variety of sources.

Online News Association
There's a lot of talk about building skills in multimedia and online news. ONA is committed to news writers, producers, designers, editors, photographers, technologists and others who produce news for the Internet or other digital delivery systems.

IRE has been helping journalists become better investigative reporters for decades. Based at the University of Missouri's J-School, IRE focuses on in-person training centered on Watchdog Workshops, Boot Camps, Custom Training, and Ethnic Media.

The ubiquitious Knight Foundation sponsors two main areas of online training. The first is the Citizen News Network, which encourages quality, community-based journalism in both traditional and non-traditional settings. Best of all, most of it is free.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2009 Dart Center Ochberg Fellowships, a unique seminar program for mid-career journalists who want to deepen their knowledge of emotional trauma and improve coverage of violence, conflict and tragedy. Please help spread the word.

Columbia University's Journalism School - with support from the National Endowment for the Arts - will host the 6th NEA Arts Journalism Institute in Classical Music & Opera.

The William Allen White School for Journalism & Mass Communications at The University of Kansas and the US Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, KS - with support from the McCormick Foundation - have announced 2nd Annual Bridging the Gap: Media and the Military Workshop for Journalists. The week-long program is designed to help reporters, editors, producers and bloggers learn more about covering the military.

The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) is now accepting applications for the 6th annual U.S. Leadership Institute for Women Journalists.

This year's institute will convene 20 mid-to-upper level female journalists for on-the-ground leadership training on July 20-22 in Chicago.

During these three days, participants will:

• Take part in highly interactive skills-building sessions on issues crucial to effective leadership, including: "What Is Leadership;" "Who Am I As A Leader;" "Leading Change;" "Leading in the Newsroom;" and "Critical Conversation: Advocacy/Managing Up."
• Participate in small “mastermind groups” on topics participants have expressed an interest in within written questionnaires and essays submitted prior to the on-site.
• Develop a personalized action plan for future career goals.
• Network with colleagues from across the country.

The on-site sessions will be facilitated by industry leaders such as Marci Burdick, Senior Vice President of Broadcasting for Schurz Communications; Liza Gross, Former Managing Editor/Presentations and Operations for The Miami Herald; and Marcy McGinnis, former Senior Vice President for News Coverage at CBS News and current Associate Dean of Stony Brook University's School of Journalism.

Institute participants will receive one-on-one (telephone and online) coaching on implementing their personalized action plans for the three months following the institute. This coaching will be conducted by veteran journalists and professional coaches.Additionally, participants will be become members of the IWMF network free of charge for one year.

FUNDING FROM THE MCCORMICK FOUNDATION IS ENABLING THE IWMF TO OFFER THIS PROGRAM AT NO COST THIS YEAR. ADDITIONALLY, 10 MINORITY PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE A $500 STIPEND TO COVER THEIR TRAVEL EXPENSES.

Who Should Apply:

We expect this year's participants – like the previous years' – to be mid- to senior-level female newsroom journalists, including Managing Editors, Deputy Managing Editors, Program Directors, News Directors, Editors, and Editorial Page Writers/Columnists.

We will cover topics of interest to television, newspaper, magazine, radio, and Internet journalists alike.

Metcalf Fellowships

Diversity Fellowships in Environmental Reporting

September 2009- June 2010

The Metcalf Diversity Fellowships support minority journalists to study marine and environmental science and report on environmental and science topics. Each fellowship includes four weeks of independent study with mentorship at the University of Rhode Island and a nine-month environmental reporting assignment at a news outlet such as: CNN, NPR's Science Friday, The Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times. Each 10-month Diversity Fellowship is supported by a $30,000 stipend and limited travel compensation.

South Asian Journalists Associations Reporting Fellowships

Fourth Annual Reporting Fellowships

Application Deadline January 10, 2009 (Original Deadline Extended)

The SAJA Reporting Fellowships program is aimed at promoting a rare element in 24/7-news-cycle journalism: in-depth and follow-up reporting on major events relating to South Asia or South Asians, long after the breaking-news crews have moved on.

Open to freelancers and staff journalists in any medium, the fellowships are meant to cover a portion of reporting expenses. A total of up to $20,000 may be given out annually, divided among projects or a single project at SAJA's discretion. Each fellowship award is typically between $3,000- $7,000.

Point Foundation

Point Foundation, the nation’s largest scholarship-granting organization for LGBT college students, is calling for applications from students of merit for the 2009-2010 academic year. Individuals enrolled in either an undergraduate or graduate program, beginning or continuing in the fall of 2009, are eligible to apply. Applications will be accepted between December 12, 2008 and February 9, 2009.

Master of Arts in Specialized Journalism

USC Annenberg's School of Journalism

Program begins August 10, 2009

USC Annenberg's Master of Arts in Specialized Journalism is a nine-month Master's Program course of study in arts journalism in collaboration with USC's five arts schools in the fields of music, dance, cinema, architecture, theatre and the fine arts. The program is designed for aspiring critics and arts reporters who have graduated from art schools or who are professional artists, as well as for established arts journalists who seek to reinvent themselves in the digital era.

Top applicants will be nominated for the prestigious USC Annenberg Graduate Fellowship which provides full tuition support and a stipend for living expenses.

Applications will be accepted between January 2- March 2, 2009.

Medicine in the Media: The Challenges of Reporting on Medical Research

Medicine in the Media: The Challenges of Reporting on Medical Research will be taught by prominent experts from the fields of medical research and health journalism. The NIH presents this free annual training opportunity to help develop journalists' and editors’ ability to evaluate and report on medical research.

Hillman Journalism Awards

Social and Economic Justice Journalism

Application Deadline January 31, 2009

The Sidney Hillman Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2009 Hillman Awards, honoring journalism that explores issues related to social and economic justice. Categories for 2009 will include books (non-fiction), newspaper reporting, magazine reporting, film and broadcast journalism (includes television and radio), photojournalism, and blogs.

There is no submission fee or form – a cover letter and three copies of the nominated material are all that are required. For photojournalism entries, they would most like to see publications, but scanned work on discs is also acceptable. For blog entries, there is a submission form on the Hillman Journalism Award's Web site.

Washington, DC Visiting Fellows Program
Deadline: Rolling
The International Forum for Democratic Studies hosts a small number of visiting fellows per year as part of its program. Visiting fellows are scholars and practitioners who wish to conduct research and writing at the Forum for a limited period of time but do not need any financial assistance.

2008-2009 McCormick Tribune Fellowship
Deadline: June 2, 2008
Media executives of color who plan to apply for the prestigious 2008-2009 McCormick Tribune Fellowship must submit their application by the deadline of June 2, 2008. This is a significant change in the application and selection process from past fellowship years. Fellows were previously chosen during the organization’s key meeting, the Fall Forum, in October. This year’s fellowship class will have the advantage of being on board to attend this year’s Forum.

Lilly Scholarships in Religion for Journalists
Deadline: July 1, 2008
Journalists interested in taking college courses in religion or spirituality may apply for a scholarship program offered by the Religion Newswriters Association.

Pulliam Fellowship for Editorial Writing

The Pulliam Fellowship awards $75,000 to an outstanding editorial writer to help broaden his or her journalistic horizons and knowledge of the world. The annual award can be used to cover the cost of study, research and/or travel in any field. In some cases, the fellowship results in editorials and other writings, including books.

Kiplinger Fellowship in Public Affairs Journalism

The Kiplinger Program is designed to help working journalists who seek to increase their digital media skills, knowledge and leadership abilities and plan to return to the journalism profession.

The Knight International Journalism Fellowships
Deadline: August 15, 2008
Sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, this program annually awards approximately 22 American journalists and news executives with fellowships to spend from two to nine months abroad in a variety of teaching, training, consulting and assistance roles, usually working in conjunction with overseas media centers. The program pays expenses and provides a stipend.

Knight Digital Media Center Workshop Fellowships

The Knight Digital Media Center Multimedia Training Program is accepting applications for 20 fellowships per workshop for journalists to attend seminars that combine practical instruction in multimedia reporting with in-depth exploration of issues in online publishing. Participants will receive six days of intense hands-on instruction on how to do multimedia stories for the Web.

International Reporting Project 2008 Fellowships

April 1 is the deadline for journalists to apply for the fall 2008 IRP Fellowships, including the first-ever partnership between the International Reporting Project (IRP) and the PBS program "FRONTLINE/World," for overseas reporting opportunities. The new IRP-FRONTLINE/World Fellowship is being offered for the first time as part of the IRP lineup of opportunities for U.S. journalists to do an international story this fall.

IRP Fellowships in International Journalism

The IRP Fellowships aim to strengthen the U.S. public's understanding of key international topics by helping to educate U.S. journalists by providing them with access to leading international experts in the United States, and offering them opportunities to do reporting projects overseas.

Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism
Deadline: April 28
The Carter Center in Atlanta, GA provides six one-year fellowships for journalists to report on a selected topic regarding mental health or mental illnesses. Each journalist awarded will receive a $10,000 stipend. Applicants must have at least three years of professional experience in journalism and submit an application packet (packet found online).

Taylor Family Award for Fairness in Newspapers

The award, which carries a $10,000 prize, was established through gifts for an endowment by members of the Taylor family, who published The Boston Globe from 1872 to 1999. For the first time, second and third place finalists will receive $1,000 each. The purpose of the award, which is administered by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University , is to encourage fairness in news coverage by America ’s daily newspapers.

The Knight Fellowships is accepting applications for its 2008-2009 fellowships program. Fellowships are granted to 12 U.S. journalists who have already accomplished a lot and are ambitious to do more. Candidates must have seven years professional experience and be currently working full-time as journalists. Fellows receive a stipend of $60,000, plus Stanford tuition and supplements for housing, child care, health insurance and books. All activities of the program are open to spouses and partners of Fellows. Fellowships include a stipend of $60,000 and Stanford tuition.

The Metcalf Institute Diversity Fellowships in Environmental Reporting are offered to five traditionally under-represented minority journalists with U.S. citizenship interested in studying marine and environmental science and developing environmental reporting skills. Participants partake in a one-month independent study at the University of Rhode Island with a nine-month reporting assignment covering environmental and science-based news at one of five news outlets. The Diversity Fellowships, which are intended to increase quality environmental reporting and diversity in newsrooms around the country, are supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation and each includes a $34,000 stipend and limited travel reimbursement.
